THE TERM LINE DANCING: is a general term used to describe, line formation - sequence dancing, which can be done in many styles. Country Line Dance (Bootscooting) seams to the most recognised but line dancing can also be performed in other styles like Latin, Funk, Disco and Pop.

THE TERM BOOTSCOOTING: is a "slang" term used to describe country western forms of dance, including Country Line Dancing, Clogging & Country Partner Dancing like West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, and Country Two Step. (Although in Perth it seams to be more commonly used to describe Country Line Dance).

THE DEFINITION OF A LINE DANCE: is a choreographed dance routine with a repeated sequence of steps, in which a group of people dance in one or more rows of lines (without regard for gender) all facing the same direction and executing the steps at the same time. Line dancers are not generally in physical contact with each other, although some line dance routines can be done in lines where the dancers face each other (contra), or where the "line" forms other shape, like a circle.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LINE DANCING:

bullet
Line Dancing is only for senior citizens...... NO
Line Dancing is done by people of all ages. The choice of dance is extremely varied, and range from simple to advanced, gentle to energetic.

bullet
Line Dancing is danced to country music only.....NO
Line Dancing is done to all sorts of music, other examples are; Latin, Pop, R&B, Soul, Rock, etc.

bullet
Line dance only consists of very basic steps such as walk walk stomp stomp.....NO
Line dance encompasses many dance styles, drawing from a variety of influences such as Latin, Ballroom, Jive, Irish, Funk, Salsa, etc. making it the most diverse dance form in the world.

bullet
"Yeehaa" is what you shout out when you Line Dance.....NO
Well, perhaps back in the "Billy Ray" days, but now it's rarely heard. It seams to be a  stereotype created by the media which has become difficult to shake. (Occasionally some one may yell it out as a joke).

bullet
Everyone "has to" wear cowboy outfits.....NO
Anything goes, make sure you are comfortable and can move freely

WHAT TO WEAR: You may wear Western Clothing if you wish, (quite a few people do), But generally regular casual wear is the norm. Comfortable footwear is a must ensuring they are secure and will not slip off your feet. They need to have enough grip to stop you from slipping over but still allow you to have some slide on the floor. So sneakers are not always suitable as they can grip too much on some floor surfaces. You'll generally find most low heeled dress shoes are fine.

DANCE SHOES: Once you have decided that line dancing could be a long term hobby for you, you may wish to invest in a pair of dance shoes. Ballroom Practice shoes (cuban/block heel), Jazz/hip hop sneakers, jazz character shoes (cuban/block heel) and Western dance boots are all suitable.

If you are wanting to purchase Western Style boots for dancing, please keep in mind there is a difference between Western dance, fashion and riding boots. You may get away with a pair of fashion boots, depending on what the sole is like, but riding boots usually don't have the flexibility that is required for dancing. Finding boots designed for dancing can be a little difficult here in Perth, but your feet will thank you if you can. I have only found two brands that I would recommend, "Evenin' Star Pro Dance Boots" with a suede dance sole, or Frisky's Line Dancing range with a PU or resin sole. (Personally unless you intend on entering competitions that require Western Style boots, it is far easier and cheaper to go to your local dancewear shop and try any of those other types of dance shoes mentioned above).
