Arum Retreat luxury accommodation is located just minutes away some of the best sporting locations Margaret River has to offer, most of which are found North and South along Caves Road. The region is famous for it's outstanding surfing. Why don't you take advantage of the 3 great local golf courses? Or why not adventure out and walk along the dramatic coastline to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, and see the clashing of the Indian and the mighty Southern Ocean. It quite literaly will blow your socks off!
Look around and there is so much more to do, which I have not listed below. Windsurfing, Kite Surfing, Waterskiing, Jetskiing, Mountain Biking, Cycling... need I go on?

SURFING

Arum Retreat is situated just minutes away from the some of Australias best surfing locations. Margaret River offers quality surf comparable to anything that Australia can offer.
See our 'Things to do Map' for directions.
For up-to-date swell and weather conditions use our link to the 'Surf Report'.
For more information buy Matt Terry's 'A Guide to Surfing Hot Spots in South Western Australia'.
Approximate car travel time to surf spots is given in brackets

Mainbreak / Surfers Point & Southside (5min)
Possibly one of the best known surfing spots in the SW region, with good access and excellent surf. The area is divided into 5 breaks; 'The Box', 'Margaret's Main', 'South Side', 'Suicides', and 'Bommie'. Best in winter or late summer. Best time is during winter or late summer with a 3.0m+ southerly swell, and SE or NE wind.
See 'Things to do Map' (H3) (472KB JPEG)

North Point / South Point (10min)
This is a very sheltered surf break and is good when the onshore sea breeze is early. Both points need a decent sized swell to break. The location is good all year round with a SW 3m+ swell, with E or NE wind and preferably low tide.
See 'Things to do Map' (G3) (472KB JPEG)

Lefthanders (8min)
This spot is a nice left break from reef that is directly in front of an outcrop of rocks. There are two breaks of which the furthest in the southerly direction is the best. It is best surfed in summer with a SW or NE wind, however the swell can be smaller as the spot is so exposed.2-3.0m is ideal at mid or high tide.
See 'Things to do Map' (G3) (472KB JPEG)

Ellensbrook (6min)
Ellensbrook is open to the swell and the waves can be large. When the swell is under about 3 metres, the northerly end of the beach is pretty good, producing both left and rights with the occaisional barrel. When the swell is greater than 2m, the break directly out from the car park is good. Head here during a 3m swell and an easterly wind.
See 'Things to do Map' (G3) (472KB JPEG)

Gas Bay / Gas Chambers (8min)
This spot is really 2 breaks seperated by a rocky outcrop. This place really rips during large swell conditions (S or SE 2m+) with no, or an offshore light breeze.

WALKS

Arum Retreat is ideal for eager hikers. There really are too many fantastic walks to list, and the directions I give should be researched in more depth. I suggest further reading in 'Walking the Capes' by Jane Scott for more information. I have listed a handfull of our personal favourites below. Remember to bring plenty of water, as there are often long distances between places where you can purchase drinks and snacks (if any). Approximate car travel time to walks, and walk distance is given in brackets

The Cape to Cape Walk (30 min to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, 124km)
This marked track follows the coast from Cape Naturaliste (northern end) to Cape Leeuwin (southern end). It is basically a 7 day walk following 124 km of coast. While the region is well developed, the coastal strip has survived in a relatively natural state. The walk regularly meets camping grounds and road access points to the coast but also leaves these quickly. With many access roads it is also easy to do shorter sections of the track. The track is a one way route and either a car shuffle must be arranged or you have to walk out to the towns from where regular bus services operate. This adds an extra half day at each end of the track. The track was officially opened on the 8th April 2001.

Smiths Beach to Canal Rocks (20 min, 5km)
This is a superb walk and one of my favourites. Here's a picture of Judith in her summer black track suit at one of the limestone formations.
Park at the Smiths Beach Car Park and walk along the beach and scramble along the coast heading South towards the impressive Canal Rocks (far left). Look out for whales during the September and October migration season (top right picture). On your return journey, head up the road from Canal Rocks heading North, then turn off and make our way through the bush towards the spring that flows all year round.
See 'Things to do Map' (C5) (472KB JPEG)

Conto's Walk (10 min, 9.5km)
This is one of the most spectacular circuit walks on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. The section of the Cape-to-Cape Walk Track along the cliff-top above Conto's Beach has breathtaking views from beginning to end, the clifs at Bob's Hollow are fascinating, and the contrasting trek back along the beach allows the cliffs to be viewed from below... and you may even run into the subterranean spring bubbling up onto the shoreline during low tide.
Start from the West end of Conto's campround and pick up the Cape-to-cape Track heading North. Met the beach at Bob Hollow's Spring and head back South along the beach to Conto's Spring.F ollow the path up to the car-par, then head for Conto's Road back to the campground.

Ellensbrook Walk (6 min, 9km)
This was the first home of pioneer settlers, Alfred and Ellen Bussle. They built Ellensbrook and lived there from 1854 to 1865, when they moved to Wallcliffe House near the mouth of Mararet River. This beautiful trail starts from the Homestead car-park at the end of Ellensbrook Road, following the signs Southeast towards the cave and waterfall (Meekadarabee Falls). Follow the Cape-to-Cape markers for 3.5 km until you hit a T-junction where you turn right (West) for 500m, then left up a steep slope, then leaving the Cape Trail, turn right heading Northwest, towards the Coast. Head North and cross the Ellensbrook River, then East, back to the car-park.

Willyabrup Cliffs (16min, 6km)
Park your car at Moses Rock and head South along the rough coast towards Willyabrup Cliffs and then onto Cullen Road. It is ideal if you can leave a second car at Cullen Road on your way up to Moses Rock. The coastline here is dramatic with granite cliff faces and limestone formations. You will pass over Willyabrup brook which flows strongly during the winter. Be prepared for some good scarmbles and beware of the falling rocks!
