Home Total Vet Care - Cats

Some commonly seen poisonings seen in cats are:

  1. Inappropriate Flea product application - This is becoming an increasingly common poisoning in cats. Old generation organophosphate and chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides and newer generation Permethrins seen in supermarket branded flea collars and topical flea applications (eg Excelpet Topspot) are the main culprits. These are highly toxic and can and do kill cats. The cases we have seen recently have been due to application of dog dose onto a cat or doubling up the dose by applying more freqently than advised or using a flea collar and a topical product.

Please Note: New generation flea products such as Advantage, Frontline and Revolution are safe, have low toxicity and a wide safety margin. They may be used safely in young and pregnant cats but please ask for advice prior to use
  2. Ingestion of Human/Canine Medications - This may occur accidentally  or through owner medicating cat. Cats are highly sensitive to lots of medications. If its good for you or your dog it may not be good for your cat. Ensure medications are not left within reach of an inquisitive cat.
  3. Lily - Arum lily commonly in floral arrangements can be highly toxic to cats if chewed.
