Herring are very fond of gents (maggots) and even though this sounds disgusting, Baileys carries a supply of gents that are especially bred in hygienic conditions just for the bait market. They also will take lures and fly plus most standard baits such as whitebait, prawns and beachworms.

Light line is recommended.

Berley is an essential part of herring fishing as it helps to keep them in your local fishing area and once  "on the bite" many can be caught quite easily making them an ideal species for children to fish for.

Use the berley sparingly so as not to overfeed them. You want to attract them not stuff them full of berley.

Legal length: none
Bag limit: 40

Floating rig for Herring, slow retrieve method

Herring will also take small lures, whitebait or even plastic tubing
