Australian salmon are not true salmon but belong to the perch
family. They are also known as Kahawai (New Zealand). The young salmon are
known as salmon trout and care must be taken as they resemble herring
and there is a size limit on salmon. They can be caught from Yallingup thru
to Fremantle towards the end of March if the schools are on time, more
often they aren't. Favourite spots are Yallingup, Smiths Beach, White Hills, most
rocky headlands and most surf beaches up to Fremantle and around Rottnest.
Watch the papers for school movements. A line of around 8kg is recommended and try not to use a fixed sinker as they can use this as a lever to throw the hook. Minimum legal length: 30cm |
