Carol Wilkes is an experienced,
multi-skilled Textile Artist and Tutor. She refers to herself as
a Surface Embellishment Technician, and Experimentalist, in both
Embroidery and Quilt Design practices.
Carol was raised in Tamworth in country NSW, and today resides in
the picturesque Blue Mountains, just west of Sydney, where she works
from her studio home. Fancy-work, knitting and dressmaking were
some of her childhood passions. Hand embroidery became another addictive
pastime before discovering the freedom and excitement of "free-motion
embroidery"
Today Carol uses fabric and thread as her medium. She designs and
embroiders complex, multi-layered images into finished artworks,
contemporary wall quilts and fashion statements. Her creative artistry,
free machine embroidery and collage techniques have developed as
a result of her passion for fabric and fashion. Combining both tradition
and modern techniques, she renders the fabric surface with her own
unique style.
Carol has completed many
years of formal study and the accumulation of extensive experience
and knowledge has very much determined where she is today.
Carol believes that gone are the days when "art was for the
viewing and textiles for the wearing".
It is an essential ingredient
that her art works have impact, colour, texture and most of all,
give great pleasure and curiosity to both viewer and wearer.
Carol is an accredited teacher with The Embroiderers Guild NSW Inc.
and has taught and exhibited extensively with TAFE Colleges and
Guilds throughout Australia, Japan and New Zealand.
Her work has been feature
in many publications and books, as well as being held in many private
collections. Her Art Quilts have been selected in travelling exhibitions
such as "Australia Dreaming", "Australia Bounty"
and "Under the Southern Cross". She has recieved awards
as well as High Distinctions in many of the exhibitions she has
entered.
Carol was selected as a joint recipient in the Quilters Gulid Inc.
2000 Sponsorship Scheme. She undertook a special project to further
educate and promote Traditional Innovative and Contemporary Quiltmaking
in Australia.
