For 10 years Graham Hay
has developed, used and shared paperclay techniques across WA, Australia
and overseas. Less well know is his experimentation with and sculpturing
in compressed paperwood.
Graham grew up in a large
New Zealand family on a farm, came to Australia in 1982, and worked
in remote areas before settling in multicultural Northbridge. His
interest is in showing in 3D the dynamic nature of his social environment
and types of knowledge as objects.
He is a graduate of Dunedin
Teachers College, the West Australia, Edith Cowan and Curtin universities.
Graham was an invited guest artist in Scotland (2000), Wales (2001)
and Lithuania (2002). He was a guest demonstrator at the 1999 and
2003 Australian Ceramics Conference and has been invited to demonstrate
at the 2004 Geelong Fibre Forum.
Selected for international
survey exhibitions in Scotland (2000), London (2001) and Holland
(2002), his work features in all international books on paperclay.
He has received grants from the state and federal arts bodies and
writes regularly for national and international craft and ceramic
publications.
A founding member of
the Thermal Shockers and Robertson Park Artists Studio, he is an
inspiring artist, who enjoys helping others get excited about paperclay
