As for a lot of women artists, throughout her artistic career,
Marilyn has tried to maintain a healthy balance of being a part
time (but successful) employee, artist, mother, wife & student.
Her diverse art practice reflects her training. In the early 80’s
she graduated in fine art majoring in sculpture at Claremont School
of Art. She then went on to university obtaining a degree in craft
majoring in textiles at Curtin University. In the early 90’s
Marilyn entered the world of part-time TAFE teaching in art and
design while studying commercial photography at the Mt. Lawley campus.
A change in direction occurred in the year 2000 when Marilyn gained
the permanent position of art & craft instructor at a psychiatric
hospital in Perth. At the same time she began her MA studies at
university in art psychotherapy.
Marilyn has always has a desire to combine all disciplines within
her art practice especially textiles and photography. This seems
to be coming true with the new body of work that she is currently
producing. By trial and error she has formulated new photographic
techniques using the computer and old photographic processes.
The workshop currently running in synthetic dyeing is one which
Marilyn has run with clients at her workplace. The results from
client work has inspired this workshop and for Marilyn to include
shibori once again into her art
