Founded as a British trading colony in 1819, Singapore is now one of the most prosperous countries in the world.

A population of 4.5 million is crowded on to this small island.

Singapore is the hub of travel in Asia for airlines, rail, ferries and cruise ships.

Food prices are cheap, accommodation is expensive compared to Kuala Lumpur and alcoholic drinks are over the top (eg $19 a beer in Orchard Road Hotel Street Bar).
