The Young Naturalists is a club for young people who have an interest in natural history and would like to learn more about the natural world from experts and by first-hand experience.

Junior Nats (ages 6 to 13)        Intermediates (ages 14 to 17)


It is part of the WA Naturalists’ Club, which was established in 1924 to encourage the study and protection of the natural environment. Membership gives you a monthly newsletter and a scientific journal as well as the opportunity to attend meetings and excursions.

February Sunday 15th 2:00 – 4:00pm Dragonflies and Other Insects At Herdsman Lake with Ben Fitzpatrick. (Free.) Meet at carpark of Wildlife Centre. Hat; gumboots or old sandshoes; jam jar with lid. Entrance cnr Flynn & Selby St, Wembley (UBD 267:D2 or Streetsmart 341:D7) Using nets to collect & classify (& release) aquatic and land insects.
March Friday 20th 8:30 – 10:00pm Deep Sky Night Perth Observatory guided tour. $20 adult, $12 child. End of Walnut Road, Bickley (UBD 315:J3 or Streetsmart 409:C4) Meet at entrance at 8:20. View planets, stars, star-clusters, nebulae and galaxies by telescopes and computers.
April Saturday 4th 9:00 – 10:30am Australian Bush Walk at the Zoo Perth Zoo, Labouchere Rd, South Perth. Meet outside entrance at 8:55. Zoo entrance fee $19.50 adult, $9.50 child, plus $1:00 each for the tour. Guided tour through the Australian native animal section, including the numbats.
May Sunday 3rd 9:30 – 11:30 Pythons Plus Henderson Environment Centre, Groat St, North Beach. (Off North Beach Road) Naturalist Don Howe will show us his pet pythons and his insect collection and talk about being a naturalist, keeping reptiles and making collections. Possibly a bush walk in Star Swamp bushland afterwards. Free for members, $5 non-mbrs??. (UBD 226:B3 or Streetsmart 310:D2)
June Sunday 7th 10-12am + picnic Fungi in the Forest Berry Reserve, Reen Rd, Gidgegannup (UBD 196 or Streetsmart 260) Combined with the Darling Range Branch of the Nats’ Club. Looking for cap fungi, bracket fungi, jelly fungi, puffballs, coral fungi and many others. Learning to record fungi including use of GPS. Leader: Roz Hart, fungi expert.
July Sunday 26th (9:00 – 11:00) Searching the Seaweed Meet at the playground in Marine Parade, near Beach St Groyne, Cottesloe. (UBD 305:P4 or Streetsmart 400:C5) We will investigate the diversity of marine creatures the winter storms have washed up. Join marine biologist Loisette Marsh and Main Club members in their Beach Sweep.
August Walk in the Wild John Forrest National Park & tunnel ?? Frogs, birds, wildflowers, reptiles etc
September Neerabup National Park, Joondalup ?? Wildflower Walk (& birds)
October 9-11 (2 nights) Dryandra Weekend Camp Dryandra Woodland and Barna Mia Animal Sanctuary.(Roads & Tracks in WA 40:E6) Birds, wildflowers, invertebrates, reptiles, numbats, star-viewing, nocturnal mammals. We will stay in cottages at Dryandra Woodland Village, 130 km from Perth.
November Penguin Island Penguins, Bridled Terns, snorkelling, beachcombing.
December Rocks, Crystals and Fossils Geology Museum at UWA ? Or Fauna Rehab. Centre, Malaga ?


IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS

Because of safety and liability issues, there are two things you need to be aware of:

1.   Children must always be accompanied by a parent or carer on Junior Naturalists’ Club excursions.

2.  After one or two excursions, families are expected to become financial members if they wish to continue with the Club. They should join as a family so that the parents as well as the children are covered by the Club’s insurance. (You may need to check your current membership status. Membership begins in January each year.)

Juniors $30 each, Adults $60 each, Family $75 for the year January to December
