Brew 24

Brew Number

24

Style

Pilsener DHP 12/4

Ingredients

Goldrush Pilsener kit

1 kg light liquid malt from Osb Pk

15 g Pride of Ringwood hop pellets (9%)

15 g Hersbrucker hop pellets ()

Brewing notes

Boil 2 L water, add kit, add malt.  Bring to boil.  Add Pride of Ringwood hops in stocking bag, boil 10 minutes and remove hops.  Remove from heat.  Add Hersbrucker hops in stocking bag, allow to rehydrate 1 to 2 minutes.  Add to 20 L cold water in fermenter complete with hops.  Pitch yeast (genuine lager yeast) on 4 April.  Decanted through coffee filter on 12 April, bulk primed with 7 oz dextrose??.  Got 30 bottles out of brew.

Tasting notes

Nice beer, initially quite spicy from the hops, becoming more subdued in the bottle.  Good, but not as good as the March double hopped pilsener.

September – 5 months old.

Good amber colour, well carbonated, head not long lived and body a little light.  (30 bottles is too many!)  Good up front and middle bittering taste, not fruity just bitter/hoppy.  Very little spiciness left from the Hersbrucker.  Tastes a bit similar to, (but a lot better than) Emu Bitter, kind of a handcrafted boutique Emu Bitter flavour.  A nice beer, but note that Pride of Ringwood has too much of a mundane, typical Australian lager taste about it when used in a pilsener.  Better with a lot more Hersbrucker and no Pride of Ringwood.

19 Jan, 9 months old.  Lively bubbling glass, good lacy head, very clear, nice dark colour.  Slight spicy edge on the nose.  Well rounded malt and hop flavour, again a bit like EB but with a better citrus tang and cleaner taste.  Still prefer Hallertau to Pride of Ringwood in a pilsener.
