Christmas 2006

For Christmas 2006, we had a late lunch at our place. We invited two lots of people from Simons work, who have recently moved to the Perth office. Our Christmas tree was about 5 m high. It is a live Christmas tree from a few years ago that we planted out in the garden. It was getting big and close to the fence, and so Simon cut it down and planted it temporarily in the lawn. He included a spear point when he filled the hole back in to direct water to the base of the trunk and keep the tree alive for a couple of weeks.

It was about 35 degrees on Christmas Day, so although we cooked outside on the bbq, we ate inside under the air conditioning.

The table centrepiece is a partridge in a pear tree. Well...it actually is a branch off the pear tree in the garden, but the partridge may be an eagle out of a Kinder Surprise with some gold paint on it.

We did another beer can turkey, separate from the bbq to allow a controlled application of coals. It was only a little one this year, 3.5 kg, which was cooked in about 2.5 hrs.

Pre cooking. Rubbed with oil and herbs, sitting on a can full of Simons chocolate porter beer. The foil worked well and the legs cooked at the same rate as the rest of the bird. Simon was too busy to get a photo of the finished product, but it worked well. Completely golden on the outside, still quite moist on the inside.

The menu included Morton Bay Bugs, smoked salmon, prawns supplied by Mark and Helen, Mexican wraps with salsa and a choice of bbq tofu or beer can turkey, Thai beef salad, Mediterranean bbq Haloumi salad, bbq corn, stuffed eggs, Christmas mince pies, brownies, and mango ice cream. All washed down with plenty of beer, including a guest English ale provided by Darryn, and some Pimms and lemonade. Here Maxi finds the jokes in the Christmas crackers particularly amusing.

The stuffed eggs were presided over by penguins.

Following dinner, Dallas entertained by destroying some stuffed toys, and Paddy and Max wrestled on the fit ball.

Finishing up with more beer and a game of cranium once some things had cooled off a little.
