Maths

In Mathematics, students learn to use ideas about Number, Space, Measurement and Chance, and mathematical ways of representing patterns and relationships, to describe, interpret and reason about their social and physical world. Mathematics plays a key role in developing students’ numeracy and assists learning across the curriculum.

(Curriculum Framework 1998)

The Mathematics curriculum is designed to meet students' individual academic needswhile developing their mathematical skills. Wembley Primary Schooldelivers quality teachingand learning programs in mathematics through a whole school approach to planning, assessment and moderation. The programs focus on explicit teaching, problem solving, mental computation and the application of these skills to real life situations, enabling students to understand and appreciate the importance of working mathematically. The First Steps Mathematics approach forms the basis of the teaching program.

Working Mathematically underpins all aspects:

  • Number
  • Space
  • Measurement
  • Chance and Data

Developmental groups are a feature of the Mathematics Program at Wembley. These groups operate at the same time each day enabling students from across year levels to interact with peers of similar ability. Programs of work effectively target specific skills and levels of achievement. Developmental groups provide excellent opportunities to support, consolidate and extend each student’s mathematical learning. Planning for student improvement focuses on learning experiences that encourage independence, connection and collaboration.

Wembley Primary School offers an eclectic approach to the teaching of mathematics:

  • First Steps Mathematics - a program which provides comprehensive maps of development to help teachers assess and monitor students’ needs.
  • Explicit teaching of tables, number facts and problem solving strategies.
  • Developmental Learning Groups
  • Mathematics extension programs run at Curtin University
  • MAWA (Mathematics Association of Western Australia)
  • Mad Maths Day
  • External competitions eg Uni of NSW Maths
