Science

In the Science learning area students learn to investigate, understand and communicate about the physical, biological and technological world and value the processes that support life on our planet. Science encourages students to become critical thinkers by encouraging them to use evidence to evaluate the use of science in society and the application of science in daily life.

(Curriculum Framework 1998)

Wembley Primary School has an innovative and exciting science program. It seeks to build on students’ natural curiosity, nurture their sense of wonder and develop their passion for exploring how the world works. Science learning and investigations are carried out within the four conceptual aspects.

The four key conceptual aspects are:

  • Life and Living
  • Earth and Beyond
  • Natural and Processed Materials
  • Energy and Change

At Wembley Science is taught from Kindergarten to Year 7 and is underpinned by the Primary Connections Program.  This program is an initiative of the Australian Academy of Science which links the teaching of science with the teaching of literacy. One of the major strategies in the Primary Connections Program is Post It Science which leads students through the process of planning, conducting, processing and evaluating a scientific investigation.

Investigating scientifically encourages students to answer questions about the natural and technological world, using reflection and analysis to prepare a plan; to collect process and interpret data, to communicate conclusions, and to evaluate their plan, procedures and findings.

Co-operative Learning Strategies and Thinking Skills are embedded in scientific investigations which include the use of:

  • Science Journal
  • Graphic organisers
  • Cross-classification charts
  • Word walls

Highlights within the science learning area include:

  • Science Week
  • Science quizzes
  • Value Added Quest
  • Science competitions
Student work is assessed and analysed firstly through teacher judgment and moderated work samples. It is validated through standardized tests such as Monitoring Standards in Education (MSE).
