Society & Environment

The Society and Environment learning area develops students’ understanding of how individuals and groups live together and interact with their environment. Students develop a respect for cultural heritage and a commitment to social justice, the demographic process and ecological sustainability.

(Curriculum Framework 1998)

Wembley Primary School provides rich and authentic learning experiences to engage students in their understanding and appreciation of local, national and global themes.A key component of the teaching of Society and Environment is a library resource teacher who supports the classroom teachers in providing the students with the skills and the time to identify and locate suitable resources.

The program is an integral part of Society and Environment in that it facilitates the Inquiry Process through Investigation, Communication and Participation aspect providing students with life long skills that can be used in many areas of the curriculum.

Skills taught in the Investigation, Communication and Participation aspect are used to develop the knowledge, values and understandings in key aspects:

  • Place and Space
  • Resources
  • Culture
  • Time, Continuity and Change
  • Natural and Social Systems
  • Active Citizenship is embedded in all content areas.

Each term there is a major focus on an aspect. The use of an integrated approach ensures that all content areas are covered during the year.

In school and out of school excursions relating to the content outcomes provide students with real life experiences and add depth to the learning program.
These include:

  • Visits to heritage sites
  • Parliament
  • Cultural group visits
  • Guest speakers
  • Environmental sites
Student work is assessed and analyzed firstly through teacher judgment and moderated work samples. It is validated through standardized tests such as Monitoring Standards in Education (MSE).
