Authors' Showcase

At our School Spelling and Writing are priority areas. At Westfield Park Primary School we have a Getting It Right in Literacy specialist.  During 2007 the emphasis is on the students from Year 1 to
Year 4.

Learning to use tools such as the  Authors' Cycle enables students to take responsibility for editing
and publishing their own work.

Every day children write for a range of purposes such as reports, narratives, procedures, recounts, descriptions and poetry.

We would like to share some of our budding young authors' works with you. Read and enjoy!

Title: The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day!
Author: Kayla
Year/Group Three
Inspiration: Innovative text based on Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
by Judith Voirst (1986)
In the morning I fell off my bunk bed and slipped on the skateboard.
My sisters got a tattoo in their cereal box but I got cereal!
I think I'm going to have a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!

When I went to school I had to sit in the middle.
When I drew a picture, the teacher liked Ashleigh's better than mine.
I got so mad!

At morning recess Ashleigh told me she didn't like me any more.
At lunchtime I fell off the slide.
After school we picked up Dad.  I accidently knocked the books off the desk.
We went home and had tea.  We had peas for tea.  I hate peas!
Then we watched TV.  There was kissing on TV.  I hate kissing!

The light had blown when I went to bed.
My sister stole my bunny.
I was very mad!
My mum didn't care.

I had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

I think I'll move to Timbuktoo.

Title: The Mystery Beast
Author: Kieran
Year/Group Year 7 Extension Group
Inspiration:
My inspiration came from a poem called The Mystery Beast
by Dannielle
A week ago my parents abandoned me at a caravan park in Victoria.
We were on a camping trip.  My family packed the car up then I went to
the toilet.  By the time I had finished they had gone.  I went to the front
desk and I saw a man who had similar facial features as Santa Claus.
He told me, in a deep rumbling voice, that they had just checked out.
This man obviously didn't care because he just fell back into a relaxed
slumber.  I stood there frozen in astonishment.  After standing still for a
few seconds, I started running down the road until the car disappeared
into the horizon.  I stopped to think; maybe they will remember and come
back for me, or maybe not!

Ten minutes passed, I idly waited like a loyal dog expecting the return of
his master, who would not appear.  I eventually realised that my family was
not going to return.  I thought to myself that I'm going to have to make
decisions and look after myself.  I stood apprehensively and I began treading
into the bush, trying to find a way towards my home.
As I got to the edge of the deep scrub, I stopped to take a breath and I sat
down on the rotting roots of a nearby tree.  As I waited, I watched the sweat drip
off my face like a string of beads dropping off their thread and hitting the
sand evaporating into nothingness.  While I watched the sweat dripping off my
face, the flies surrounded my mouth and nose searching for moisture.
Soon I started to get weary, then I drifted into a slumber and fell asleep.
I dreamt about a really scary beast, which was in the forest I was  resting in.
I found this beast while I was walking through the forest, trying to find a way home.  The beast came towards me then leapt in the air and - I woke suddenly from the dream.  It made me think, would the beast in my dream really be in
this bush?  I stood up eager to find out if the beast was waiting for me.
I continued treading through the bush.
I heard a very strange noise, could that be the beast in my dream?  I started
heading towards the strange noise. The noise became louder and clearer.
It sounded like someone or something very angry.  I got so close to the noise
that it almost burst my eardrums.  I squatted next to a tree, then peered around
the edge of the tree trunk and saw the beastly monster which was in my dream.
It seemed to want to eat me and tear me apart.  The beast started to chase me
back towards the Caravan Park.  I got to the front desk puffed from running .

I saw my mum standing next to the man who looked like Santa Claus asking him
if he had seen me.  It took her a few minutes to realise that I was standing next
to her panting, like a tired dog.  She asked me where I'd been as we walked out
the door to the car.  On the way home I told her about the beast, she said to me
keep dreaming.  All the way home I didn't say a word.

From that day on I had the same dream as I had in the bush that day.

Title: Perilous Ocean
Author: Nicholas
Year/Group Year 7 Extension Group
Inspiration: My inspiration came from a poem called The Unsettled Ocean
by Kevin
I am propelling myself through the perilous ocean at tremendous speeds.
Above me waves are crashing and washing onto the shore.  I swim towards
the ocean floor burying my nose in the smooth, grainy sand searching for food.  Preoccupied with hunger, I swim through a blanket of thick kelp.  I struggle to
break free, thrashing and twisting, in a panicked frenzy.  Water frothing and
blinding my vision.  I tear at the kelp with my serrated teeth with the ferocity
of a wild dog.  I swim away exhausted.

I swim further out to sea.  Coral is forming.  Colours of red, purple, blue,
orange and pink glimmer near the ocean's surface, which has now grown calm
and content.  I casually swim through the bed of coral.  Dreary eyes, eyes of
venomous fish and eels watch me angrily.  Nothing else moves.  Hisssss, a
moray eel glides towards me baring it's short piercing teeth.  I dive, straight
towards the ocean floor burying my body in the sand.  I am totally concealed
beneath the ocean floor.

The moray eel tosses up the sand in search of me.  The eel hisses in frustration and swims away in a disgruntled manner.  I wait in fear for the eel to swim away.
When the eel is out of sight I continue on my journey out to sea.  The venomous
fish lose interest in me and swim away or satisfy their own needs elsewhere.

I cautiously swim to the sunken passenger liner resting on the ocean floor
concealed in barnacles.  Fellow sharks are frenzying on a feast of small
unwelcome fish, invading their territory.  I involve myself in the feast until
I am bloated.  Wearily I swim back to the safety of the shore in the shadow
of the moonlight.

Title: The Motorcross Disaster
Author: Gavin
Year/Group Year 7
Inspiration: Personal experience

It was a beautiful day yesterday,  just the right kind of weather to ride a
motorbike. So my Mum, Dad, two brothers and I went to Wanneroo to ride
our motor bikes.

When we arrived there were at least fifty people already there so I got
all geared up in my armour, helmet, gloves, boots, knee pads, elbow pads and motorcross gear and went out on the track to ride with my friends.
On the first lap I was just getting used to the track and it was really boggy.
Eventually I got used to it but in the second race disaster struck!

I knew something was going to happen I could just feel it.  I had done two
laps and I was on my last lap, then on the S-bends the kid in front of me fell
off and I fell right on top of him.  His peg went straight into the side of my knee.
I knew instantly I wouldn’t be allowed to ride again that day.

Title: Jasmin and the Witch
Author: Nicole
Year/Group Three
Inspiration: We had been reading many different Fairy Tales and identifying the elements of a Fairy Tale
Once upon a time there lived a Queen and a King who wanted a daughter more than
anything in the world.

One day the Queen walked in the dark, gloomy, dangerous woods.  Just as the
Queen entered the woods it started to rain.  She looked around and saw a cottage
in the distance. The Queen ran to the door of the cottage and knocked at the door.
Out came a Witch and she pretended to be an old lady.  Then the Witch let the
Queen in.  Then the Witch said, “Why are you crying?”  The Queen replied, “I
would love to have a baby daughter.”  The Queen wept and cried.  Just then the
Witch had a big grin on her face and whispered to the Queen, “I can make a recipe
and when you drink it you will have a baby in a year.”  The Queen was very pleased
at what the Witch said.  So the Witch made the recipe and the Queen drank it.

A year later the Queen had a baby with silky golden hair, blue eyes and a sweet
face. But the Queen long forgot what the Witch said a year ago.  “Bring her to me
on her 18th birthday.”  When the baby was born the Queen called her, “Jasmin”.
As she grew she became more beautiful.  But on her 18th birthday the Witch came
to the castle to get the princess.  The Queen had to give the Witch Jasmin or she
would turn her into a frog.

So the Witch took Jasmin to her cottage in the woods and made her do all the
housework like sweeping, washing the dishes, washing the clothes and hanging them
on the line.  The Witch made a dragon to guard her just in case she tried to escape.
There was a brightly coloured bird in a cage in the big room and sometimes when
the Witch had gone she let the bird from the cage and let him fly around in the
room while Jasmin had to do the work.

But one day the parrot flew onto Jasmin’s shoulder and Jasmin kissed him on the
beak.  In the room, for a second or two, there was a bright light and the parrot
turned into a very handsome prince and he asked, “How will we get out of here
with a dragon to guard us?” Then the princess said to the prince, “I have made
friends with the dragon outside because he thinks I am so kind to him.”  A few
minutes later they went out of the house and went past the dragon and ran to the
castle as fast as they could.

But just as they saw the end of the woods the Witch came into the woods and saw
the two running towards her.  Suddenly she clapped her hands and it made them
stop running and turned and walked back to the cottage. When the Dragon saw
all this he got really angry and let the two go to the castle.

Meanwhile the Dragon took a deep breath and fire came out of his mouth and
made the Witch melt because she was allergic to fire.  Next the Dragon flew to
the Castle and took all the people on rides to anywhere they wanted.  A year later
the Prince and Princess Jasmin got married and lived happily ever after.

Title: Lilac Island
Author: Jaala Heka
Year/Group Year 7  - Finalist in Nestle Writing Competition
Inspiration: I'd like to be on a deserted island by myself and this story is about my dreams.

Thirteen years ago I left Port Lincoln with my dad and his crew.  The vessel that
we sailed upon was named The Lilac. Three days into the voyage to New York I
saw huge black clouds moving in on the vessel that we sailed upon.

I yelled at my dad and said, "Dad, there's black clouds overhead about three hours
away."  Soon after my father said, "OK, lovey, come down from there."  As I was
coming down from the lookout I started to feel a cool breeze on my face.

I quickly scampered back up to the lookout and I saw a tornado coming towards
our ship.  I started to get scared so I quickly scampered back down onto the deck
of the ship.

I yelled to my father that the storm was moving triple it's normal speed and that
the storm was already here and I was really, really scared.  Dad quickly yelled at
the crew members to take down all the sails and to get the rest of the crew under
the deck and to close all the doors to make sure the water did not get inside of the
cabins.

As we all scampered down into the cabin we all snuggled up into a cuddling position.
I heard my dad yell.  When a wave hit the boat he must have gone overboard.

When I woke up I found myself on a deserted island.  My island.  So I called it
"Lilac Island."

Title: The Haunting
Author: Rebecca
Year/Group Year 7 - Nestle Writing Competition Entry
Inspiration: A Teacher's Topic card for story writing ideas helped me get the idea for writing this story.

In a split second everything went silent, the electricity switched off, the window
panes began to shake.  A dim light was shining directly above my head.  I was
absolutely petrified.

Suddenly an almost voice sounded my name over and over again.  "Thaia, Thaia,"
the mumbled voice seemed to be calling me up the stairs.  I stopped at my bedroom
door.  Suddenly a cold and ghastly hand attempted to rest upon my shoulder.
Finger by finger, hand by hand, until both hands had settled on my uneasy body.
Cautiously I turned.  I froze in astonishment and I was the next one to SCREAM..........

It was now Wednesday, the 27th of April.  There was a foul and repulsive smell
that seemed to be coming from next door.  I hadn't seen or heard anything for about
two weeks.  To tell you the truth I found it quite suspicious, so I decided to go and investigate - (as I was about to find out this was not such a good idea.)

I crept out of my room at about 12 o'clock with my torch and good luck cap.  I made
my way down the cold stoney driveway, across the soggy lawn and onto the Gordon's
lawn.  I tip-toed my way around the old creepy house.  I shone my torch up to Thaia's bedroom window.  Funnily enough it was open.  I began to fall asleep, but I was
immediately awoken by a heart-pounding screech.  I tried to run but my legs seemed
to be pinned down.  I tried to scream but nothing came out.  I felt like vomiting, but
suddenly I was pulled into the old mansion..... the lights began to flicker, the window
panes began to shake, a haunting laugh shattered my confidence.  I crawled into a
tight ball in the corner of the black antique kitchen, squeezed my eyes shut and hoped
when I opened them it was all over.......I slowly opened my eyes and there I was,
outside of the house looking out at Thaia's slightly opened bedroom window.

I bolted across the grass and up the driveway.  My heart was pounding.  I slammed
the front door behind me.  I knew something was in there, I had to go back ......

It was now Thursday night.  I had gone over and over the frightening experience in
my head, trying to figure out a reasonable explanation.  It seemed impossible!  But
suddenly, it came to me.

Finally, midnight!  The antique grandfather clock rang out.  I headed out of my room,
into the hallway, down the spiral staircase and out the door.  I decided to go through
the dining room window (which was never locked).   But, to my surprise it was bolted
shut.  An icy cold hand cupped itself around my mouth, squeezing me tighter and
tighter until I was totally out of breath.  I was trying to breathe through my nose,
which was still blacked from my cold last week.  I tried to struggle free.  It seemed impossible.  All of a sudden it stopped.  A shadowy figure stepped forward.
It, it was ............

I hesitated in disbelief, took a deep breath and sprinted home.  A blood curdling
scream came from next door as I closed the front door behind me.
One thing for sure, I was not going back there.

Until tomorrow . . . . . . .

Title: The Haunted House
Author: Ryan
Year/Group Year 3
Inspiration:
At the end of our street is a big old house. Everybody thinks it is a Haunted House.

Last Saturday me and my friends were playing with my ball and my friend threw the
ball too hard. It hit me hard on the chest and went through the window of the haunted
house. We argued about who would go into the haunted house and I happened to be
the bravest.
So I crept up to the front gate. The walls were covered with green slime and the garden
was all overgrown and dead. I crept up to the front door and opened it with care.
I stepped inside the house. The door shut with a BANG!
I turned to look back and I saw a Mother Ghost. I turned to run but to my amazement I
saw that I was surrounded by Ghosts. But just then I remembered that ghosts float.
So I zoomed under the frightening ghosts and headed for the first door in sight.
I quickly ran inside and slammed the door behind me.I heard a creaking sound and
I saw a Vampire climbing out of his coffin. I screamed so loud that I thought that my lungs
were going to explode. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw a long sharp needle.
I quickly bent down and picked it up and aimed at the Vampires chest. I quickly threw the
needle and it hit the Vampire in the chest and pinned him to his coffin. Just then I spotted
the ball. I quickly ran and got it. I ran to the door and opened it.

I never played near the house again.

At the end of our street is a big old house. Everybody thinks it is a HAUNTED HOUSE.

Last Saturday my friends and I were playing with my pet budgie, in its cage on wheels,
when it rolled down the hill and hit the gate. The gate creaked and slowly opened and the
cage rolled into the garden. The fence was high and rickety. It had spikes on the top.
I was terrified of my bird being in there alone. My friends tried to push me into the garden
but I stood there firm. The garden was just inside the gate so it was easy to see.
The garden had ivy growing up the walls and all weeds growing between the dead flowers.
I slowly walked into the garden through the open gate. When I reached the front door,
I slowly put my hand out and turned the door handle. When the door opened I stepped inside cautiously.

Suddenly the door shut with a BANG!
And I heard a howling noise.
I tried to run but I was scared stiff.

Then, just as suddenly as it had started the howling noise stopped. I took one more step
and I saw a shimmering shadow. I screamed so loud that my friends shouted “What's wrong?”
I stopped screaming and after taking some deep breaths shouted back “There’s a ghost
in front of me and I’m just going to run though it.” I had said that because I saw my budgie
at the other side of the ghost. I ran through him and grabbed the cage bars. I pulled it towards
the front door. I pulled the heavy door while my friends pushed. When I finally got out we all
ran out of the garden gate.
When we were standing outside on the path we all shouted, “We will never go near that house again.”

To that day we never have.

At the end of our street is a big old house. Everybody thinks it is a haunted house.

Last Saturday my friends and I were playing with my kite. My friend let it go, it went
through the window of the house. We had a fight over who was going to go and get it.
I was the bravest to go and get it.

I walked towards the gate. The fence had slime on it and had big points on it.
It was brown and broken. The garden was overgrown and dead. I walked in slowly
and I heard a howling noise, “ This could be dangerous,” I thought.
I was starting to get frightened but not scared enough to scream.
I wished my friends were with me.

Then I heard a clatter. I found the kite and looked around, and when I looked back the
kite was gone. Something is strange around here I thought. Now I knew that it had to be
a haunted house. I started to shiver. I was so frightened I stayed still and then I  heard a
strange noise.  It was a noise that sounded like a ghost.

It made me JUMP.  I got the kite and ran to the entrance.  The door was locked I ran
for the window. It was locked as well. Then I realised that I was trapped in the house.
I  could hear my parents. My mum found the key under a pot and rescued me.
When I got home I got in TROUBLE and mum said that I had to play in the backyard from
now on.

I still got to play with my friends.
I didn’t ever play out the front  again.

Title: Hansel and Gretal of the Future
Author: Corinda
Year/Group Year 4
Inspiration:

In 3600 some people lived in space. They were Hansel and Gretel and a husband who
has a bad wife. The two children were brother and sister.

Now that they’re still little children they were starting to hunt in space.

They loved hunting in space. When they first started they could not stop hunting in space.

The problem is that Hansel and Gretel are big now and one day they went for a walk in
space and they came to a cratered house. And an alien came out of the house and tried
to grab them but the children started to scream.

Later an astronaut came to rescue them and chopped the cratered house and the alien
got very angry and fell to the ground.

Now that Hansel and Gretel are free they know not to go there again and the alien was
never to be seen again.

“You are never to go there again.” snapped Dad.

Title: Hansel and Gretal - The Witch's Story
Author: Alexa
Year/Group Year 4
Inspiration:
Hi there,

I’m the witch from Hansel and Gretel .  Well I’m not really a witch! I really am a very
poor lady because I spent all my money on this lolly house. But now look at it, it’s a
JAGGED TOPPLED DOWN PIECE OF RUBBISH! All because of those children.
Well no use arguing about it.

The good thing is that they’re back in their own house again and you know where
I’m telling you from?  I’m telling  you from the  fire place where Gretel threw me in.

I didn’t spend all my money on this house because I wanted to cook and eat children!
It was because I wanted to have a party with some children.

As soon as they ate all of my house they said, “Thanks.” That was the last I saw of them
but I saved myself by locking myself in the stove to save myself from being buried alive
in my tumbling down house.

I waited until it was dark before I came out. My house had been eaten by Hansel and
Gretel and all their nasty friends. They were gone.

I got out of my stove and I saw there was nothing left.

They got in the news because they told a big pack of lies.

I’d better say goodbye because I’ve left my roast in my oven too long---roast veges
that is, not children.

Remember me?
I am the witch from Hansel and Gretel. Well, I’m really an old lady. I am now in…
well you know.

But I’ll tell you what really happened. Well, I put Hansel & Gretel in the cage because
I wanted them to like me.

Okay, start at the beginning.
Well, I was normally in my small candy house when I heard nibbling, I walked outside
and who should I see but Hansel & Gretel. Now, those history books are rubbish, plain
rubbish. They were NOT small & sweet, they were big, bald and sly. Like big, bald bullies.
They walked straight into my HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you believe it?
In the story I locked them in a cage. But they walked straight into the cage. I would never
lock someone in a cage NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kindly let them out. In the book it said that I made them do work, that’s rubbish.
Hansel stole handcuffs from the day before and he tied my hands with them.
Gretel did NOT push me into the stove, I had to lock myself in the stove to get away from
those murderous children. When the police came to arrest Hansel & Gretel, I realized the
chief policeman was their dad. So they told their dad a bunch of lies. That’s how it got in the newspaper.
Well, that’s my side!

Title: The Three Little Pigs - The Wolf's Story
Author: Owen
Year/Group Year 4
Inspiration:
This is the real story of the Three Little Pigs
Now that I'm in wolf heaven, and besides why would I be in heaven if I was bad.
I’ll tell you the true story of what happened.

Yeah the Three Little Pigs left home to build one of their own homes. So I went to
the first house because he wasn’t letting me in.
I-I-I-I coughed because I have asthma so I blew the house down.

But that dumb pig took the food from his house. All I wanted was to be friends and
eat food because I was so hungry. I couldn’t eat a pig  - besides for a wolf they're
disgusting.
So I went to the second house, the same thing happened there so really I'm the hero
and they're the villains.

So now it’s time to go to the third house but no - I huffed and I puffed but the brick
house … oh well I climbed to the roof to go down the chimney but you know what?
Oooouch!
Burnt!
That was the end of me.
They probably celebrated because I was dead.
But I left Earth happily.

Did I regret it? No.

So I'm in heaven watching over those dumb pigs!
And I never got back something special that they stole from me.
”See ya Piggy3,” said Piggy 1 and Piggy 2.
“Bye,” said Piggy 3.
“Now let's all have a brick house of our own.” said Piggy 2.
“Yeah,” said Piggy 1.

Once upon a time there lived a chef. He hated elephants.
One day he heard a trumpet sound.
He looked behind the door but there was nothing there.

He looked out the window and he saw something grey.
He heard the trumpet sound again.

This time he saw a huge ear, a trunk, some feet and legs and a tail.

It was an elephant!

He absolutely hated them!

The next morning the chef woke really early and went hunting.
He snuck up right behind the elephant.
When the elephant turned behind he saw the chef and ran off.

The chef had two sharp knives with him. He threw the knives
and they landed on the ground.

The chef blushed in anger!

He picked up the knives and threw them again. This time they
landed in the side of the elephant’s head.

Years after that the knives became ancient and everyone called them tusks.

The place is Europa.

The year is 2050.

The Earth has been destroyed and only a small colony of Earthlings has survived.

In a galaxy far, far away there was a big bang and we had to go to Europa to build
big submarines to float under the water to get food.

But we couldn’t find food anywhere.

Just then we found tons of fish.
“Fish!” cried the people.

Happily they said they were clever to the other people too, nicely and slowly.

Do you know how they caught the fish?
With a fishing rod through the window.

In the end they all hope they can keep the fish.

Author: Daniel
Year/Group Year 4
Inspiration:

One day in the year 4000, a little boy named Neil Armstrong (who was named after one
of his greatest ancestors) went outside and saw a UFO!

He ran inside and told his mum and dad.

His dad told the news reporters to show it on every channel of the T.V. in every country of
the world.

They discovered that the UFO belonged to the Planet Destroyers.

The Planet Destroyers were aliens from an unknown asteroid galaxy. They were known to
destroy all the planet's atmosphere in the universe.

Neil knew that the Planet Destroyers were here to start a war and he was right  - the Planet Destroyers were here to start a war.

The Earth’s atmosphere was destroyed by the Evil Liter. Only the people in Neil’s country
escaped to Europa.

A few days later Neil told the colony “I will destroy the Planet Destroyers once and for all.”
The colony cheered for Neil so he set off to find the Planet Destroyers asteroid base.
He found the fake asteroid and destroyed it with his lasers. The mother ship desperately
tried to escape but Neil was too fast. He fired his strongest missiles and the mother ship
was destroyed.

When he got back he told everyone the good news.
Neil received a medal for bravery and courage.

and eaten pop jacks or gone ice- skating. I always eat Wizz -fizz and do wiz poppers and
go flying around the room.

Sadly I shuffled to my bedroom and looked through my telescope at all the stars.
I even saw Neptune flying in its orbit.

Chapter 2.
I was now landing.  I knew because the loud speaker was talking. I couldn’t wait to
land on Pluto. When we landed I had a snowball fight with Dad.    Soon after we made a
snowman then went ice -skating. That was so wonderful.

We went near some rocks and sat down. We ate some Wizz- fizz  - we went back to the
space ship. Much later Gemma came over. We both ate some wiz fizz then potato chips “Yum,”squeaked Gemma.
“Yum,” I repeated.

CHAPTER 3.
Just then we heard a scream.
“Aaahhh”.
A fire just came.
Gemma and I ran to the door but the fire was gone. We checked Princess Danielle’s place.
“She’s gone.”
We gasped. We looked up. A space ship was there. We knew she was in it.
We ran to the space ship. "Dorio, step on it." "Follow that space ship."

We went over hills, around rings and orbiting planets. We came to Space Ludo,
which meant fighting. We rang all the people who were left on Pluto. Some of them arrived.
We all fought the alien.

But we couldn’t beat him. We ran to an open door. Inside there were people working
like dogs – dashing, prancing all around the room. A girl was sitting banging on a door.
They opened it. It was the Princess. The Princess vanished though.
Gemma, Maddison, Naomi and I dashed through a corridor, turned left next.
Right there in front of us was the Princess. We rang Football Head. He came. We met him
at the front door. We showed him where the Princess was and he saved her.

Chapter 4
We all went on a picnic to celebrate. I chased a star all the way to the flat park.

One day a little girl was walking on a path when …… she saw a little spider.
She wanted to keep it as a pet but when she went home there was a big racket.

Her mum started screaming and her Dad got very mad. The little girl said,
“What are you all getting worried for?” she said that it is her friend . So they
left her with it.

The next day the little girl did not go to school – she was too busy with her
pet spider. Her Mum said,
“Off  with you. Go to school.”

“No. No. No. Who will look after my pet spider?” she asked.

“I will,” replied the Mother.

“No you won’t Mum! You don’t even look after me and if you don’t look after
your own child properly how could you look after my pet spider?’

“Oh, all right. You do not have to go to school. You can stay home and look after
your dumb spider. Hmm!” said the mother.

So she spent one year looking after the little spider. She fed it and washed it
and even tucked it into bed. She loved it so much that she even kissed it goodnight
at night. She kept on doing this for years. She did all that until she was twenty two
but now she is twenty seven.

Sometimes she even slept with it. She went for a walk with it and made a little
house for it. She let it eat from her bowl and let it drink out of her cup. She even
found some more spiders to keep the little spider company.

But one day the little spider died and the girl was very, very sad.

The next day she found a pet puppy dog ……

Inspiration: Studies of The Sea

I was born in a cave. I was different to my brothers and sisters because I was pink.
But I wasn't different to my whole family because my mum was pink too.

I went out at night.  When I left the cave I was swimming happily in the water.
Just then some hammerhead sharks came.  I attacked them and they swam away.

It was morning and I still wasn't home!  I wasn't a baby any more.
I was a grown dolphin.  I was jumping over the water and caught a fish and ate it.

I went back to the cave and my mum was happy to see me.  I told her the whole story.

I swim all night and I sleep in the day.

It is dark at night, but it is very dark blue.
The stars twinkle too.
I like being a dolphin because I am free forever.

I can dance, play, eat and much more.
I have lots of friends that are nice and gentle to me.
I have one best friend and her name is Angela.
She is a dolphin too.
It is fun.

One day as I swam out of the ocean I found footprints - people footprints!
Then I knew I had to turn back.  But, sharks were surrounding me.

A storm came.  I had to find shelter and food.  Soon I met with a crab.
I asked him, "Where am I?"  He replied, "On the beach."  I was shocked.

It was getting dark.  I found a box to sleep in.
In the morning I went back into the ocean.

When I got home to my cave underwater I wrote in my book -
'UP ABOVE IS A DANGEROUS PLACE'.
It's lots better to be home.
