Our School
Westfield Park is located on the corner of Cammillo Rd and Hemingway Drive. Some interesting things that happen at our school are the discos we have at the end of every term because we can dance to our favourite songs and have food and soft drink. We also have free dress days. We have a garden behind our undercover area and it is called the "Secret Garden". We have a canteen that serves delicious food! At recess we can buy popcorn and iced buns and at lunch we can buy ice-creams! We have a dentist if we have a toothache. We also have an underpass instead of walking across the road. This is for our safety. We have a wetland where there are many types of birds. On Wednesdays we finish at 2:30pm instead of 3:00pm. On Thursdays and Fridays we have "Computer Club". Once a year we have "Ripper Recess". We are responsible for making, running, selling and buying things like food, karaoke, dancing, face painting, soap making and the popstick game!

Our Class
Our theme for Term 1 was Japan and our theme for Term 2 is Australia. Our subjects are Maths, S& E, T & E, Science, LOTE, Health & Phys Ed, English and Art. Our teacher's name is Miss Danker. She comes from South Africa. We have thirty one people in our class. Two people come from New Zealand, two from England and one from Bangkok.

In Term 1 we did raffle tickets and in Term 2 we are doing "Wonderful Learners". To get a raffle ticket you have to do good work and be good. To be a "Wonderful Learner" you have to be responsible and be wonderful!!! The teacher choses one ot two people to put their names in stars and then they're the wonderful learners of the week. They also get a certificate and a prize from the prize box.

We also do something called a "Maths Challenge" in our class. In a Maths challenge our teachers choose a person then the person chooses a person to challenge and our teacher calls out a times table. The first person to say the answer wins! We are learning our time tables really well. Have a go in your own classroom!

Duties are jobs. We do duties in our class. The duties are; Messenger, Lunch Monitor, Books and Handouts People, Library Monitor and Room Monitors. Read on to find out more about our fantastic class.

We have a computer in our classroom which we have been using to turn our Haiku poems into a Powerpoint presentation.

ART
In Art this year we have done Ikebana which is the art of Japanese flower arranging. It is simple but really effective. There are three kinds of branches which are different sizes. One represents heaven, one earth, and one man. We have also made kimonos. You can make paper kimonos too! Real kimonos are made out of material. In Japan they are worn for festive occasions. We have also made Japanese flags using our compasses. We have  practised our calligraphy writing. We are busy learning about Australian artists such as Russell Drysdale and Sydney Nolan and their art work. We have produced some beautiful Aboriginal X-ray art using pastels, crayons and an etching technique. Have a look at our art in the Art Gallery.

T& E
Carp kite streamers are used for children's festivals in Japan. Our class enjoyed making carp kite streamers because it was fun and enjoyable. Carp kite streamers are joined onto a bamboo pole and are made up of lots of different materials.

Clickhere to look at pictures of carp kite streamers that we have made.

A carp is a special fish that is displayed on the Children's Festival in Japan. The carp has a reputation as a fish with a strong will to live and is able to swim over fierce waterfalls. Parents in Japan want their sons to grow up big and strong just like these fish.

We have also worked with our Buddy Year 1 class to help them to design and make animal enclosures.

Science
We do Science on Tuesdays. We have done a number of different experiments to learn about sytems. A system is a group of parts that work together to make something work/happen.First we did an experiment where we made a balloon rocket. Then next we wrote about what we saw. We also saw popcorn dance and made an underwater diver. We also made a telephone system.

Clickhere to see our Science pictures.

We also watched a bubble show called Bubblemania. We learnt how to make lots of interesting bubbles like the spiral bubble. We had a workshop where we got to have little baby mouths and try out our own bubbles.

Westfield Park's French teacher is very nice. Her name is Madame Fiddock. In French we are learning about "The Year of the Outback." Room 11 has done a file about the Outback. The book that we have read is "Astertix." In French we have different puppets. We use them to say our feelings. French words are really hard to learn. Au revoir for now!

Health
In Health we have been learning about dangerous inside and outside fires. Some fires start by leaving a tea towel on the stove when it is on. There are other ways a fire can start. Some fire safety rules are: We have read a book called "The Trail of Smokey Burns" and Smokey Burns goes around burning houses down and he doesn't get caught in the end. We have made our own evacuation plands and meeting places.
