This term Room 9
Year 3/4 have been learning about space. We made space collages by
painting a piece of paper black and on another piece of paper we made patterns
with rollers, sponges, forks and some straws. We let them dry and on the
back we drew circles with a compass, cut them out carefully and stuck them
on the black paper to represent planets and moons.
We wrote poems about space
telling what we see, hear, feel and what was happening. We had to
leave out words like the, and, I etc.
We have really enjoyed
learning about space and have learned lots of interesting things.
Our class hopes you enjoy our web page about space.

Planet
Facts and Links
Mercury
This planet is the closest
to the sun. It also is the second smallest planet. The colour
is black and it has a little bit of red. Mercury is named after the
Greek god of Messengers. It is too hot for people to land on.
Mercury has craters and dead volcanoes and it has no moons.
Venus
Venus is the hottest planet.
It is the second planet from the sun. Venus is Earth's twin.
It is nearly the size of Earth. Venus has all kinds of gases.
You can't live on Venus because the atmosphere will crush you.
Earth
Earth is the third planet
from the sun. It is one of the inner terrestrial planets. It
has only one moon. Earth spins on its axis every 24 hours and orbits
the sun once a year. Earth is the only planet with known life.
Moon
The first person to walk
on the Moon was Neil Armstrong. It has heaps of craters like Mercury.
The Moon has heaps of grey dust. It has lots of cinder cones which
are volcanoes. Footprints left on the Moon will there for thousands
of years for there is no wind to disturb them.
Mars
Mars is the fourth planet
from the sun. It has large dust storms. Mars has rivers but
they don't have water in them. It has the largest volcano in the
solar system. It is called Olympus Mons. This is three times
bigger than Mount Everest.
Jupiter
Jupiter is the fifth planet
from the sun. It is also a gassy planet. Jupiter has a giant
red spot. Scientists say that the giant spot is a huge storm that
has gone on for thousands of years. It is the biggest planet and
has very faint rings. Jupiter was named by the Ancient Romans, it
is one of the four planets with rings.
Saturn
Saturn is a gas planet
and it is also the sixth planet from the sun. Saturns rings are made
of dust, rock and ice. These rings are the biggest rings of all the
planets. Saturn has 23 moons. It is the second biggest planet.
Uranus
Uranus has two rings and
it is a gas planet. It is a greenish, bluish colour and it is the
seventh planet from the sun. It is made of gases, rocky core and
a little bit of ice.
Neptune
Neptune is a gas planet
and it has a thick layer of graphite in the atmosphere. Neptune is
the eighth planet from the sun. It's blue because of the methane.
Neptune has faint rings like Saturn. Nobody has landed on Neptune
because it is a gas planet.
Pluto
Pluto is the ninth planet
from the sun. Pluto is a terrestrial planet. It has a moon
called Charon. If you went to Pluto you would die because it is so
cold and Pluto is smaller than Earth's moon.
