Educational Toys for Year One

By Aleshia and Tahlia

The students of Years 5, 6 & 7 in Room 14, Westfield Park Primary School, completed a project to make educational toys for the Year 1 students in June 2007. They used a board, papier mache and peg dolls.

The first toy is a 3-D car track board for small toy cars. In playing with it the students will learn mathematical terms related to space like up, down, over, above, behind and heaps more. They can also think about road safety as they look at the roads and think about where a person would safely cross them.

The other toy is a set of peg dolls representing Nursery Rhyme characters like Rapunzel, Cinderella, a Prince and a witch, so that the young children can tell these stories to each other and practise their oral language skills.

We enjoyed making the toys and we hope the Year 1s like playing with them.
