SCHOOL PURPOSE STATEMENT
Our purpose is to further develop the academic, cognitive and social skills of our students so that they realise their potential, enjoy a full range of academic, social and cultural activities and participate as a responsible member of both our school and society.

Principal’s Pen
This year our Year 7 Graduation will be held at the same time as our End of Year Presentation Day Assembly.  This will be Tuesday the 15 of December, 9:30 – 11:30am.  Our presentation day is a very special day on the school’s calendar, a day when we are able to celebrate students’ achievements across the year.  Students will also be performing the dance routines they have been learning for the last few months.  Please put this date in your calendar so you can come and join us in these celebrations.

This term our ‘End of Term Reward’ will be held at the impressive indoor playground at Champion Lakes Christian Church.  As with previous terms, to be eligible to attend, students will have to earn at least 6 credit slips this term and have an acceptable level of attendance.  The reward will be held on the last day of term, 17 December.

We are already looking towards 2010 and planning our class structures.  It looks like we will grow a little next year and have one extra class of students.  If you know of friends or relatives who are likely to enrol their children in our school for next year, please encourage them to contact the school.  If you know that you will be leaving us, I would also appreciate you letting us know. This information is very useful in organising teachers and classes for next year.

I unfortunately often hear from students that they did not tell the teacher about something because they did not want to be a ‘dobber’.  This makes it very difficult to resolve issues at an early stage as we are not aware of them.  Students are always encouraged to ‘tell’ adults about anything that makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.  In general, ‘telling’ is about help, while ‘dobbing’ is about getting someone into trouble.  Please read the information in the box about ‘Dobbing’ and ‘Telling’.

Best Wishes and Keep Smiling

Mr Tim Sewell
Principal

Kalamunda History Village
As part of their studies of Time Continuity and Change the children of rooms nine and ten visited the Kalamunda History Village where they were able to experience some elements of daily life from the early 1800s. Some of their favourite activities included exploring Kally the steam engine, experiencing a printing lesson in an early school room (complete with pen and ink), doing the washing with a washboard and wringer, ironing the clothes with a flat iron, grinding wheat to make flour, playing simple games, discovering what it was like to live  without electricity and grading their fruit using an old grading machine.

DANCE PROGRAM
It is great to see all our students eagerly engaged in the Dance Lessons that are happening every Monday. Both students and teachers, seem to be enjoying themselves in the preparation for our Grand Dance staging on our Presentation Assembly Day, later on this year.

We are lucky enough to be able to offer this opportunity to our students, as it is an important component of the compulsory Arts Learning Area.

We greatly appreciate you encouraging your child/ren to make the most of this program and extend their artistic skills.

Deputy Principal

Teacher for a Day

When:  Friday 20th November
Cost:  50 cents a ticket.

Tickets will be on sale from Monday 16th November from your class teacher.

Dobbing vs Telling – what’s right and wrong?
‘Telling’ is about getting help for yourself or someone else who needs it – it’s about trying to make a situation better.  ‘Dobbing’ however is primarily concerned with ‘getting someone into trouble’ or ‘told off’ and is not about safety or making things better.

While teachers actively supervise all students all day, it is not possible to hear and see every exchange between students.  This is why it is essential for students to ‘tell’ teachers when someone, or a group of students, are behaving in a manner that is dangerous or nasty.  Teachers will then investigate and intervene as appropriate.  We will not tolerate any behaviour designed to intimidate anyone who has ‘told’ a teacher in an effort to get help or make our school a better place – this is not ‘dobbing’ – it’s ‘telling’  - and this is very much encouraged and supported by staff.

Please encourage your child/ren to ‘tell’ adults when someone is behaving in a way that hurts someone or something.

Help
We are always looking for assistance with many aspects of this project.  If you think you (or your company /work) are able to assist in any way, please contact Mr Burns.  Help with construction of the kitchen and / or gardens and then maintenance of the gardens and assistance with the cooking program will be required.  Remember this is one of the ways you can earn reward points through our Parent Passport Program.
Legacy Trees
Part of our Kitchen Garden project includes the planting of various fruiting trees.  As a school community member you are able to purchase a tree for the project that will include a bollard and stainless steel plaque with your name on it permanently attached. The cost of purchasing a “Legacy Tree” is $70 and includes the purchase of the tree, plaque, bollard, reticulation where required and appropriate fertilisers and soil conditioners.

To date we have started planting out the orchard and we have orders for four of these trees. We need to increase this number to ten before we can purchase the stainless steel plaques so please think about whether your family or business is willing to purchase a tree.  Order forms are available from the front office.

The Sunday Times
Over the next few weeks, The Sunday Times newspaper is continuing to run their special promotion of the DK Eyewonder books. The school has taken part in this promotion in order to collect class sets of these educational books.

As a result, on a Monday, we have a number of The Sunday Times newspapers left and parents are welcome to receive a free copy of The Sunday Times until they are all gone.

If you would like a free copy, please check at the front of the school or at the office before of after school.

Thank you

Lisa Harrison
Deputy Principal

Message from the School Chaplain
It was wonderful to spend a fun day during
the holidays with some of the ‘Rainbows’ and
‘Kids with Courage’ children and their parents
at the Champion Lakes Church indoor playground.
Remember our value this month is ‘commitment’..

The ‘Good Book’ says…
Galatians 6:9
So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a
good crop if we don't give up, or quit.

  • Water is the best drink

  • Your child can make their own frozen fruit juice combinations.
  • Pineapple and orange juice
  • Apple with a dash of peach nectar
  • Orange juice with a dash of mango nectar

  • Water with a splash of lemon or lime low joule cordial (cordial intake should be limited as it is high in sugar and has little nutritional content).
