SCHOOL PURPOSE STATEMENT
Our purpose is to further develop the academic, cognitive and social skills of our students so that they realise their potential, enjoy a full range of academic, social and cultural activities and participate as a responsible member of both our school and society.

Principal’s Pen
On Tuesday we enjoyed a wonderfully successful opening of our Aquaponics system and launch of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.  Mr Neville Passmore was our guest speaker and he spoke about his passion for such ventures.  He urged everyone to get involved in growing their own fresh fruit and vegetables.  The Honourable Alannah MacTiernan also spoke, praising the school for the program; talking about the importance of where our food comes from and how best to use it in making fresh enjoyable meals.  There was a good turn out from local business that either have, or might, support our project in the future and also from local organisations such as the Lions club and the Kelmscott / Westfield Garden Association.  We hope that these businesses and organisations may be able to assist with either donations or through volunteering time to support both kitchen and garden lessons.

I remind parents that semester one reports will be available for collection from the classrooms next Wednesday, the 1st of July.  Classrooms will be open between 2:30 and 3:30pm to pick up reports.  I have enjoyed reading all of the reports; hearing about the progress individual students have made throughout the year.  I hope that you too can celebrate the successes which have occurred.

Due to the poor weather last Tuesday our ‘Jump-off’ day for the Jump Rope for Heart program was delayed.  This will now be held next Tuesday, 30 June.  Tomorrow’s ‘Eagles Cup’ football and netball has also been cancelled due to the extreme weather forecast.

As this is the last newsletter before the end of term, I wish our students a wonderful and rejuvenating break.

Best Wishes and Keep Smiling

Mr Tim Sewell
Principal

LEGACY TREES
Part of our Kitchen Garden project includes the planting of various fruiting trees.  As a school community member you  are able to purchase a tree for the project that will include a bollard and stainless steel plaque with your name on it, permanently attached. The cost of purchasing a “Legacy Tree” is $70 and includes the purchase of the tree, plaque, bollard, reticulation where required and appropriate fertilisers and soil conditioners.  Application forms for the Legacy Trees are available from the front office.

The Year Seven students have purchased the first tree.

Placement of Year Sevens
It was announced at the recent Western Australian Primary Principals’ Association Conference that the decision to leave year 7 students in primary schools (made by the previous Minister for Education) is to be reviewed. In 2006 the Western Australian Primary Principals' Association (WAPPA) opposed the idea to move year 7s. This position was adopted after widely consulting with community members, educators and parents. Concerns raised included the financial cost, are year 7 students socially and emotionally ready and will it improve academic results.  An evidence based research paper was developed and delivered to Government at the time. Again, WAPPA is seeking the view of parents on a range of related issues. Please enter this link into your web browser to access a survey that will only take a few minutes to complete.

Thank you for your time. Completing the survey will ensure parents’ views are represented.

Please remember Cookie Dough forms are due in by 1st July.

 Enrolments for 2010
Enrolments are now being taken for Pre Primary and  Year 1 for 2010.  Please come  into the  school office and fill out an application form.

Please write this date on your calendar to ensure your child is wearing full school uniform on that date.

Thank you very much for your co-operation.

Human Swine Influenza
There has been a change in the way the Department of Health has decided to manage the human swine influenza. Based on the relatively mild nature of the disease in most cases the approach from now on is as follows:
There will no longer be any requirement for voluntary exclusion for children and staff returning from the previous countries of concern (Mexico, USA, Canada, Japan or Panama) or Victoria.
School closures will cease to be used.
Children, visitors and staff who have flu-like illness should not attend school.  When illness is identified during a school day children will be isolated and parents contacted to have your child taken home.
Department of Health advice in relation to flu-like symptoms is available from its website health.wa.gov.au.
Children and adults with severe illness, and those with chronic underlying medical problems such as asthma, heart disease, morbid obesity or diabetes, and women who are pregnant should consult their doctor for specific advice.
Hygiene practices (eg hand washing and coughing etiquette) will be emphasised to help prevent the spread of germs that cause illness, such as human swine influenza.

An invitation to attend the annual NAIDOC Celebration held on Tuesday 7th July, 2009 from 10a.m. – 2p.m. at the Champion Centre, 76 Champion Drive, Seville Grove (next door to the Armadale Pool)

The City of Armadale NAIDOC gatherings have always celebrated the value of our Aboriginal heritage and commemorated our culture by observing the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Armadale community. This year the Champion Centre’s gathering will be a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community whilst reflecting on this year’s theme Honouring our Elders, Nurturing Our Youth.

Come for a day filled with food, exhibitor displays, a children’s art extraordinaire, amusement rides, possible Auskick football clinic, interactive activities, and, of course, fantastic entertainment.

Value of the Month
Honesty
Why Practice it?
Honesty is important because it builds trust. When people lie, or cover up mistakes, others can’t trust them. When people aren’t honest with themselves, they pretend that something doesn’t matter when it does or they exaggerate to impress others. When you are honest with yourself, you accept yourself as you are. When you are honest others can  believe you.

 Message from the School Chaplain
If we want to be a person of INTEGRITY and stand tall and proud in society, one  of the most important things we need is HONESTY and TRUSTWORTHINESS.

The ‘Good Book’ says…

Proverbs 11:13
A gadabout gossip can't be trusted with a secret,
but someone of integrity won't violate a confidence.

Friends of Westfield Park –
 PASSPORT Program..
Don’t forget all  PASSPORT members to cash in
your points at the end of the term, which is next week!! You need to come and see me on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
Remember, your vouchers are still valid till the end of the year. With the help of Mrs Kocaj, the school chaplain, the children of room ten have brightened up their classroom by painting this bushland mural and frog pond on the windows of their room. In addition to being an interesting art activity the mural has provided inspiration for stories and plays. Some of the plays will be performed for the junior classes next term.
