SCHOOL PURPOSE STATEMENT
Our purpose is to further develop the academic, cognitive and social skills of our students so that they realise their potential, enjoy a full range of academic, social and cultural activities and participate as a responsible member of both our school and society.

Principal’s Pen
We have had a wonderfully smooth start to 2010 – thank you to everyone; parents, students and staff for helping make this happen.  It has been great to welcome back all of our students, and also I extend a big welcome to all of our new students and their families.  With a full pre-primary class of 25 students and 20 new students across the rest of our school there are plenty of wonderful new smiling, if a bit nervous, faces around our school.  Welcome to you all!

I also welcome one new teacher to our school, Ms Robert Hansen.  Ms Hansen has come from Thornlie PS, however she is not new to our school, having completed one of her teaching practicums at our school a few years ago.

Our school structure for 2010 is:
Deputies – Mrs Lobato and Miss Harrison
Rm 1  Pre Primary  Mrs Cardy
Rm 3  Year One  Mrs Marshall
Rm 4  Year Two  Mrs McIntosh
Rm 9   Year Three  Mrs Piper
Rm 10  Year Three/Four  Ms Hansen
Rm 13  Year Four/Five Ms Williamson
Rm 14  Year Five/Six  Mrs Churchward
Rm 17   Year Six/Seven Mrs Bosman

Mrs McWhirter will also be working with the junior students and Mr Burns with the senior students.

I would like to congratulate Ms VanTrigt on recently completing her teaching degree which she has been working towards over the past 2 years.  We wish her well with her teaching career.

This year we are looking to simplify our school rules for our students.  All our rules will come under three broad headings – BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE and BE RESPECTFUL.  All classes will be using these three umbrella rules to guide all student behaviour.

Wednesday 17 February we have Parent Information Sessions for each class.  Please see the timeline elsewhere in this newsletter.  This is an opportunity to hear about classroom routines, behaviour and work expectations, including homework.  Please come along.

Finally, I wish everyone a great year.   I hope that we as a school community can build the great achievements of last year.

Best Wishes and Keep Smiling

Mr Tim Sewell
Principal

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
Welcome back everyone to a wonderful, exciting year. Our first value that we are looking at this year is SELF RESPECT.
The Good Book says we are to “love others
as we love ourselves”
Loving ourselves is not always an easy task but having a healthy sense of who we are is vitally important to how we get along together.
Remember a smile is something we can give away to others that doesn’t  cost anything.

Friends of Westfield Park –
 PASSPORT Program.
We will be starting the year with our new
PASSPORT books, so come and see me
ASAP to get your new book and register.
This is a great way to benefit, not only
yourselves but the school as well.

This service is available to students, parents, guardians and grandparents who have children attending Westfield Primary School.

We provide informal counseling, support and referrals to local agencies to parents, guardians and children.

This service is free and confidential

9399 1022 or Tim Sewell / Lisa Harrison on 9390 5555 at the school.  A diary will be left at reception for appointment times
Appointments are available on: Monday and Friday (times will vary)

Help
We are always looking for assistance with many aspects of this project.  If you think you (or your company /work) are able to assist in any way, please contact Mr Burns.  Help with construction of the kitchen and / or gardens and then maintenance of the gardens and assistance with the cooking program will be required.  Remember this is one of the ways you can earn reward points through our Parent Passport Program.
Legacy Trees
Part of our Kitchen Garden project includes the planting of various fruiting trees.  As a school community member you are able to purchase a tree for the project that will include a bollard and stainless steel plaque with your name on it permanently attached. The cost of purchasing a “Legacy Tree” is $70 and includes the purchase of the tree, plaque, bollard, reticulation where required and appropriate fertilisers and soil conditioners.

To date we have started planting out the orchard and we have orders for four of these trees. We need to increase this number to ten before we can purchase the stainless steel plaques so please think about whether your family or business is willing to purchase a tree.  Order forms are available from the front office.
