Year Six students from rooms 15, 16 and 17 participated in a series of actvities designed to develop an understanding of wetlands in Australia and the world. We started locally at our own Heron Reserve. We are now learning about other wetlands such as Mangroves located in the northern areas of Australia. As part of the Bogho Project coordinated by Calgarry Education District in Alberta Canada we will be sharing our research and learning with students around the world. Understanding Wetlands
Students took part in testing the water for acidity, turbity, temperature, salinity and macroinvertebrate populations with the guidance of Carlie a Regional Co ordinator from the
Ribbons of Blue program. Ribbons of Blue is a project undertaken by the Waters and Rivers Commission in conjunction with the National Heritage Trust supporting interested groups in undertaking the water monitoring process. After learning about the importance of native vegetation to the wetlands inhabitants students participated in planting rushes, sedges and bushes kindly donated by Jennifer Pearson and the Armadale Gosnells Catchment Group. We would like to thank Elizabeth Harding from the friends of Heron Park for her assistance.
