Gibson Family

John Gibson was born in about 1856 in Ayrshire, Scotland.  According to his marriage certificate, his parents were Nathan Gibson and Sarah McCULLOCH.


On the 30th October 1877, John Gibson was married to Mary LECKIE (married as HUNTER) at Cross Hill, Ayrshire, by James Crawford, Minister.  The witnesses were R Leckie and A King.  John's occupation as per his marriage certificate was Ploughman.  Mary (born illegitimate as Leckie) was a Domestic Servant, and her parents were listed as John Hunter and Anne Leckie.  See the Leckie Family Page for more information on Mary Leckie/Hunter.


John and Mary left Scotland almost immediately, arriving in Adelaide, South Australia on the 23rd April 1878.  They had travelled on board the 'Clyde'.  John was aged 22 years and listed as an Agricultural Labourer.  Mary was aged 20, she did not have an occupation listed on the shipping records.


John and Mary had three children in South Australia:


John Gibson born 02 September 1878 at Modbury

Rosa (Rose Linda) Gibson born 07 June 1880 at Modbury

Annie Gibson born 23 March 1882 at Tea Tree Gully


John and Mary then appear in New South Wales where they had two daughters:


Mary Gibson born 1884 at Wallsend

Grace Gibson born 18 April 1886 at Wyong Creek.  John's occupation as Riding Sawyer on Grace's birth certificate.


Their remaining four children were born in Western Australia:


Jane  Gibson born 1890 at Albany

Eva Cicly Gibson born 1892 at Albany

Alexander James Gibson born 1894 at Geraldton

Thelma Gibson born 1899 at Burswood


Rose Linda or Rosa as she was registered, was my Great Grandmother.  She married Robert Henry COLLINS on the 08 November 1899 at Burswood, WA.  For more details on this family check the Collins Family Page.   Rose died on the 07 January 1940 at Kalgoorlie, WA.  She is buried with her husband Henry Collins in the Kalgoorlie Cemetery.


John married Emma Elizabeth CROW on 15 March 1905 at St Mary's Church, North Fremantle, WA.  John died aged 82 years on 13 July 1962 at Nedlands, Perth, WA.  His wife Emma died at Mt Henry, WA on 02 August 1964.  John and Emma are buried together in the Fremantle Cemetery, WA.


Annie married Francis LYONS in 1903 at Fremantle, WA.  Annie died in 1959 at Kalgoorlie, WA.  I have no information on Francis Lyons.


Mary married William James DAVIS in 1903 at Fremantle, WA.


Grace married John GARDNER.  Grace died 27 September 1966 and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery, Perth with her husband John, who died on 23 October 1921.

UPDATE:  3 January 2007


John Gibson, Mary Gibson nee Hunter and their children Jane, Eva, Alexander and Thelma went to South Africa in the early 1900's.  Mary died there in 1924 and John died there in 1926.


Western Mail dated 18 November 1926, page 2 notes: John Gibson, late Contractor of Perth, died 5 October 1926 at Germiston Hospital, South Africa, also Mary on 20 October 1924. Mother and father of John (Fremantle), Rose (Mrs Collins, Maroondah), Annie (Mrs Doddington, Kalgoorlie), Mary (Mrs Davis, Cottesloe), Grace (Mrs Gardiner, Belmont) Jean (Mrs Collins, dec), Alex (S Africa), Eva (Mrs Bossoff, S Africa), Thelma (Mrs Bukes, S Africa).


UPDATE: 19 January 2007


Jane Gibson married a man named COLLINS.  I do not have any other information on Jane, other than her death in 1916 in South Africa.


Eva Cicly Gibson married Hendrik Christian BOSHOFF on the 23rd December 1912 at Welverdiend, Transvaal, South Africa.  They had the following known children:  John Harold Boshoff bn 1914, Ronnie Cecil Boshoff bn 1916, Douglas Alec Boshoff bn 1918, Louis Edwin bn 1919, Mary Eva Boshoff bn 1922, Allan Boshoff bn 1932 and Noel Christian Boshoff bn 1936.  I believe Eva Cicly died on the 24 Dec 1923.


Alexander James Gibson married Anna Matilda FERREIRA.  Alexander died on 13 May 1951 at Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.


Thelma Gibson married George Hamilton COWAN, whom she later divorced.  Thelma then married Alexander Ruytenbeek BUKES.  Thelma died on 2 April 1940 at Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.
