Ann Knowsley

born 1852

Bridlington, Yorkshire, England

Ann Knowsley was the daughter of George Knowsley and Mary Wells.  She was born in the picturesque seaside town of Bridlington Quay in the East Riding of Yorkshire.  In 1861 Ann is living with her grandparents George and Ann Knowsley and she was a scholar.

By 1871 Ann is back living with her parents at Hilderthorpe, Yorkshire.  Dressmaking was her forte before and after her children were born.

Ann married John Robinson on 28 February 1872 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Bridlington.  John was the son of John Robinson and Mary nee Dunn.  In the later part of the same year, their first child was born, they named him John Henry.  Their first daughter Mary Ann was born in 1874, followed by George Robert in 1875, Eliza Jane in 1876, Albert William in 1878 and James Edward in 1879.

In 1881 the family were living at East Huntow Farm just out of Bridlington.  John farmed the land along with Ann and their two indoor servants.

On the 1st September 1884, John passed away leaving Ann devastated and alone with  her three youngest children.  Ann moved to 47 Market Place, Bridlington between John's death and 1891 where she appears on the census as a dressmaker with her three children.

Elizabeth Davison was a lodging house keeper at 2 Regent Place, Bridlington in 1901, and it is there Ann was living as Elizabeth's housekeeper.  Living with them is 'Marie', which I assume is Ann's daughter Mary Ann.

By 1911 Ann is living alone at 23 Kirkgate, Bridlington, again working as a dressmaker.  It was here that Ann passed away on 21 December 1926.  She never remarried and was 74 years of age when she died.
