Ottolangui Family

The information on the Ottolangui Family is the result of a combined effort by myself and my new found cousin, Merle.

We have discovered that David LANGLEY was born David OTTOLANGUI in London in 1812.

David was a convict to Van Diemen's Land in 1830, you can refer to the links below to find out more about his convict records and family life in VDL.  David disappeared from VDL after 1846.  David Langley next appears with his new wife and children in San Francisco in 1880.

The David Langley on this census would have had ample time to leave VDL, go to San Francisco, remarry and have more children, as the first child on this index - Lewis - would have been born circa 1855.  Bearing in mind that Lewis was the first child born to this couple.

The following is information supplied by my cousin Merle:

"Our first Ottolenghi was a David who arrived in London in 1776. Once in England the family changed the spelling of their name to Ottolengui, Ottolangui, Ottolengue and variations and a lot changed to Langley very early on for everyday life, but still used Ottolangui for legal documents. Many of the family were born Ottolangui and died as Langley.

Menachem Ottolenghi b. abt 1698 married Judica De Valletro b abt 1699 in Livorno Italy in 1719.

They had 11 children. Their son David Ottolenghi was born in 1734. He married about 1762 [this is estimated] and his wife is unknown. In 1776 he arrived in London along with some or all of his family.  David Ottolenghi and his wife had 7 children all born in Livorno Italy.

David's [bn 1734] son Israel Ottolenghi was born in 1767 in Livorno, Italy and married Miriam Halevy [English form of the Jewish name Miriam is Amelia, all our family are called Miriam on synagogue records but use the English alternative Amelia, as she did]. They married in 1792 in London England. They had 8 children. (We are descendant of their son Moses.) Their youngest son David was born in 1812 in Aldgate, London. We have record of his birth in 1812 but nothing after that."

Israel and Miriam Halevy were married on 31 October 1792 in London.  Their children are:

David born 25 January 1793, London.  David died in April 1809 in London, and was buried on the 11 April 1809 at the Nova Cemetery, London.

Abraham born 18 March 1794, London.  He died in May 1866 in London.  Abraham was married to Sarah TOLEDANO in 1825, and Debra MARTIN in 1847.

Menahem born 11 February 1798, London.  Menahem married Bilh [Elizabeth] LEB on 23 July 1823 in London.

Elisha [Alexander] born about 1804, Mile End, London.  Married Bilha [Elizabeth] LEB 31 August 1832 in London.  Elisha died in 1860 in London, and was buried on the 9 July 1860 in the Novo Cemetery, London.

Samuel born 27 December 1805, London.  He died on the 16 September 1897 at Beth Holim (home for the aged), London, and was buried on the 19 September 1897 in the Nova Cemetery, London.  Samuel married Brina (Elisheba/Betsy) LEVY on 21 January 1831 at the Bevis Marks Synagogue, London.

Moses born 22 January 1808, Rosemary Lane, Aldgate, London.  He died on 12 February 1885 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  Married Emma BENSABAT on 27 February 1831, in London.

Aaron born 6 June 1810, St Catherine's, London.  Aaron died on 23 August 1874, 25 Shepherd St, Tenter Ground, Spitalfields, London.  He married Reyna BENSABAT on 3 April 1833 in London.

David born 27 October 1812, London.

Israel born 16 May 1814, London.  Israel died in August of 1869 in London.

David was caught in Rosemary Lane accused of stealing 24lb of cheese, and as his brother Moses was born in Rosemary Lane, which would appear to be a slim connection to some, no further information can be found in London for David, it is more likely than not that they are one and the same person.

You will note that on the 1870 census for David Langley, his occupation is Stone Mason.  David Langley the convict to Tasmania has the occupation of Bricklayer and Master Bricklayer on the birth entries for his children born in Tasmania.

Also, on the 1930 Census for San Francisco for his daughter Amelia born in San Francisco, she has her father being born in Australia, although on previous census records she has him born in England.  Amelia must have known of some connection her father had with Australia.

David's great grandson Norton Langley, a descendant from his USA marriage to Esther Harris, was able to confirm that David Langley who was a convict to Australia, was indeed the same David Langley who married Esther Harris. Norton was told by his grandfather that the name Langley was originally O' Ta' Langui, later becoming Lamgie and then Langley.

David Langley died in San Francisco in 1882, aged 70 years, which gives his birth year of circa 1812.  This coupled with the above facts found for David Langley I am now convinced that David Ottolangui born London 1812, David Langley convict to Tasmania, and the David Langley who is on the census records, and died in San Francisco are all one and the same person.

Merle Langley has written a story on the life of David Ottolangui.  Click HERE to read this fascinating and enlightening documentation of David's life.
