Rachel Langley

born 21 December 1846

Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia

Rachel Langley was the daughter of David Langley and Phillis Skinner.  Rachel's birth record lists her as an Unnamed Female.  Not much is known of Rachel's life.  We do know that she lived with her sister Sarah's family in Argyle Street, Hobart, as this is where she died on the 10th August 1861 from diphtheria, aged 15 years.

This report fits with Rachel's birth year of 1846.  Some descendants would say that the death record for Richard Langley is in fact Rachel, but I believe that they were two different people.  Richard was 18 when he died, and Rachel was 15.  They both died of diphtheria, which would not have been uncommon if the disease was on the rampage through old Hobart town, particularly if they were both living in Argyle Street with their sister Sarah.  There is also the unnamed female child born to David and Phillis, who I believe to be Rachel.  I could find no newspaper report on Richard, but I would imagine the family would still be in shock over Rachel's death the month earlier.  I therefore believe that Richard and Rachel were brother and sister.
