You are my favourite author and your
books RULE!!!!!
GAZ & Gaz
Takes Off ARE THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ IN
MY LIFE.
Stephen, Sacred Heart
Return Ticket
is a great book. As soon as I started reading this book I loved it.
Melissa, ACT
I was just wondering if you could tell
me how you came up with the idea of writing a novel like "Gaz"?
I mean how could you write so much on just things that could really
happen?
Janice, Duncraig (Perth)
A
Hi Janice! Well to start with, I
just wanted to write a short story for a bunch of kids I knew who
didn't like reading. I thought about some of the stuff which
went on in their lives - an average kind of weekend, and it grew from
that.
"Escaping Paradise” is
one of the best novels I have ever read. I urge Year 10 and Year 11
students to read this novel! It is a good novel for teenagers, especially
teenagers in Indonesia. The plot kept me wondering until the end.
Dewi, Jakarta, INDONESIA.
You wouldn’t believe it I
finished Gaz Takes Off in one day! I got it from the library after
telling Mum I needed it for school. She finally gave in. I thought
Gaz was good, but this book is awesome. Especially where Gaz gets
stuck out in the cold, and then goes into the change rooms with Bridgette
and Sonja, that’s heaps cool.
Joseph, Sydney.
What's your favourite book - from
the ones you've written?
Vincent, Mt Barker, Senior High School, WA
A
That's a tough one... it's like asking me which of my children do
I love the best? Each is special in different ways. It depends on
the mood I'm in at the time
I really enjoyed reading your novel,
“Escaping Paradise”. As an Indonesian student who lives
in Jakarta, I am so interested because your novel is very exciting
and full of adventure.
Johannes, IPEKA, Jakarta.
I have just read Escaping Paradise and I thought it was absolutely
brilliant. I loved hearing about the Balinese/Javanese cultures and
what it was like to be kidnapped. It felt so real especially when
you described about the metal band around Nicki's ankle. It felt like
I was the one with the chain around my ankle.
Karleen, Albany SHS
P.S. Do you think you could write a sequel to Escaping Paradise from
Josh's point of view? Please consider it.
I loved the way you read parts of your books to us, as you
have a really expressive voice. It was great to find out about why
you wrote Kim. We are still reading Gaz but lots of kids are keen
to start Different Voices, especially the girls. We never seem to
have enough time in class to read a lot of stories.
River, Balcatta P.S.
A
Thanks, River. I hope you enjoy getting to know Kim better through
Different Voices.
Do you like writing?
Hamish, Padbury Senior High School
A
You bet! What other jobs are there where you get to spend a heap of
the time daydreaming?! Actually, it's a bit like the lives of some
of my characters. Some days it's like there's nothing but rainbows
and the sweet sound of the surf, and other times it's a struggle to
keep the self-doubt (and the bills!) at bay.
I really enjoyed the workshop, the Tai Chi was excellent and
I will remember to do it before I start writing at home. Letting us
write what we want and giving us freedom made the workshop more enjoyable
and not making us read our writing or show it to anyone was also good.
Thank you.
Tom, Armadale.
Do you know the story before you start writing?
Julian, Nedlands PS, W.A.
A
No, not usually. Mostly I know where it's heading... I have a vague
idea of how it will end (though I didn't with Gaz). Normally, I just
start with my main characters and follow them around and they take
me for a roller-coaster ride.
I was really amazed by the calibre of writing going on around
me. I loved talking to you about my poem, Freedom. I got soooo many
helpful ideas. I also loved the atmosphere we created, and I will
definitely seek to create this atmosphere again.
PS I enjoyed the snakes also!
Melinda.
I enjoy the loose kind of atmosphere that you create, and
the motivation you give us to write. I feel that I really could be
a published writer which makes me feel great!
Fleur
I learned that I could write, well. I think that I found something
in myself that I didn't know was there.
Rachel
I really liked the way you write short chapters in Gaz Takes
Off instead of long ones as I could read three chapters a night and
I never have to stop in the middle of chapter.
Ben, Bellevue Hill, Sydney NSW
