Russian Doll Billie and all that Jazz

When Marie ‘layered out’ the Russian Doll idea as a theme for this presentation, my wayward brain immediately began to hum.

Mention ‘doll’ and immediately Duke Ellington’s ‘Satin Doll’ starts to play in my head, which is kind of kookily synchronistic, because even before the tune was over, I’d clicked that online role play is a lot like jazz.

They both work off a delicate balance of 'structure and creativity' - a basic riff to be picked up and transformed and improvised on ‘for all its worth’. Throw in something 'intuitively right' out of far left field and see who picks it up.

This makes for extremely cool fun, very edge-of-seat engaging and highly addictive. I can't wait for the next one! To nurture and maintain the ratio of creative chaos and order a really connected, tuned - in band leader who knows when to give the players their head and when to reign in the solo is also vital in both cases.

So, in honour, the undeniable, intuitive jazz connection.
