Colloidal Silver - Nature's Antibiotic (a brief history)
What makes colloidal silver worthy of investigation today are two very special features.
The first is that bacteria cannot develop immunity colloidal silver. Once exposed to
silver, bacteria simply are unable to reproduce and consequently die. Micro organisms
depend on specific enzymes to breathe - this is especially critical as the micro organism
reproduces and passes through a single cell phase. The presence of silver acts as a
catalyst that disables these enzymes. The result is that the bacteria suffocates and dies
without producing the next generation. Resistant strains of bacteria do not follow
treatment as has been the case with modern synthetic antibiotics. The second feature about
colloidal silver that cannot be dismissed easily is it's broad spectrum effectiveness.
Unlike man made antibiotics which are dedicated and effective against only one or two
types of bacteria at a time, colloidal silver on the other hand is effective and deadly to
many different bacteria at the same time. Some researchers suggest that upto as many as
600 pathogenic organisms are effectively destroyed by colloidal silver. It's no wonder
that modern medical researchers and scientists are going back to reinvestigate the
applications their predecessors found in colloidal silver. It may hold the key to the
balance of power in the fight against pathogenic organisms. The third feature which sets
colloidal silver apart from synthetic antibiotics is its ability to aid and assist normal
healthy cell function and growth, something that cannot be said about synthetic
antibiotics. (Back

It is interesting to note that given the history of colloidal silver where perhaps
hundreds of thousands of people have used colloidal silver over the centuries there are no
recorded cases of overdose. Argyria, where the skin develops a blue tint, is often
confused as a side effect from the use of colloidal silver and is not the case. Argyria
occurs only where very large quantities os silver are taken and where the particle size is
greater than 15 microns. Most authorities agree that other than discoloration of the skin
there are no other harmful consequences. Silver is naturally expelled by the
body through the liver and kidneys and a case of argyria can be reversed by cessation of
the consumption of silver.
Given that colloidal silver seems to offer a cheap and effective solution to many who
suffer from debilitating diseases caused by micro organisms it's no surprise that
colloidal silver is gaining public attention. Certainly it is easy to find an abundance of
anecdotal stories from those who are keen to promote the benefits of colloidal silver. In
his book "Colloidal Silver the Hidden Truth" Dr Keith Courtney explains that
colloidal silver consists of microscopic clusters of pure silver held in suspension in
distilled water by an electric charge. He goes on to say that colloidal silver being
resistant to acids in the stomach is able to destroy "unfriendly" bacterial,
viral, yeast, and fungal infections while neither adversely affecting the large and small
intestine or any of the "friendly" bacteria that we require. Silver is finding
its way back into more applications daily. It's use as an antibiotic in air conditioning
units is expanding rapidly in public buildings and shopping centers around the world.
Several major airlines have adopted silver filtration systems for their jet liners where
the risk of infectious disease being transmitted is very high. As the research continues
and the evidence becomes clearer there is no doubt that new applications will be found
which have not yet been fully explored. Both the food industry and the cosmetic industry
are two areas other than health that may find great benefit from the application of
colloidal silver in the manufacture of their products. It has already been taken up by the
veterinary profession where many a pet has had a new lease of life. Today colloidal silver
is no longer expensive and only prescribed by medical practitioners it is produced
commercially and freely available. There is also a growing popularity in "do it your
self kits" that allow you to produce your own colloidal silver at home. So while the
scientists do their research in the laboratory the public are doing their own at home and
only time will tell, how much of an answer in the fight against bacteria colloidal silver
will prove to be.
Perhaps the adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away", may soon change to
"an apple and a teaspoon of silver a day keeps
." Nova January 2001
