WKC NATIONAL KELPIE FIELD TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The course comprised a cast lift
and draw, the sheep were then taken to the yards and placed in a small
holding
yard whilst the worker completed the
required movement of sheep through the
yards. At the conclusion of his yard work the worker released
his
original sheep and continued onto the outside course- the fist obstacle
was a
gap, followed by a ‘trap’ which was a new innovation to most it
comprised a pen
with a gate at the back. The dog was
required to put the sheep into the pen and hold them in whilst the
worker moved
to the back of the pen and opened the gate - if the dog was not in full
control
and/or the sheep were disturbed by the
movement of the worker they tended to
break out over or past the dog. The
final obstacle was an orthodox pen.
The sheep generously supplied by
Grant Cooke were ideal trial sheep which worked kindly provided they
were not
bumped or bustled. As the scores
suggest the standard of work was high overall and that displayed by all
the
finalist was outstanding particularly by the winner Whites Jillie who
scored a
99 in the heats- which is believed to be a record high score for the
event. The Novice Kelpie Trial was run
over the same course and here again the standard of work displayed was
very
good.
The National Kelpie and Australasian championship trials was very competently judged by Ray
Sutherland “ Ray has been trialling
since the 1970's. He and his wife run a
mixed farming operation in Koorda Western Australia.
Ray is a life member of the Northern
Districts Working Sheep Dog Club and has served as chairman of the
judge’s
panel in the W A W S D A. He has won many
Open Championships and Yard and Utility trials, and has represented WA
and
Judged in the Australian Supreme Championship and the Trans Tasman Test
in New
Zealand and Queensland” (acknowledgement: Trial Schedule)
The Bradley
Sisters Best type Kelpie event saw an entry of approximately 30 judged by Mrs Cooke and Barbara Cooper. The
overall high quality of the entry made the final selection difficult. The vast majority of the entry were of good
working conformation and breed type. In
the final selection the winner Fleetfeet Will just had the edge over
his rivals
- in addition to his good sound conformation he presented very well and has a particularly attractive Kelpie head and
alert expression.
Congratulations
to the host organising committee and all their helpers on the conduct
of a very
well organised trial and our special thank you to the two judges who
spent many
many hours carefully assessing each and every dog’s run..
